To examine the effects of the changes in the abundance of breeding substrates on attack density and reproductive success of the species, I investigated the abundance and reproductive status of I. typographus japonicas on the experimentally installed downed logs in a hemiboreal natural forest pre-dominated by Pieca jezoensis before and after a large-scale wind-disturbance. In the following year of wind disturbance, position utilized by I. typographus japonicus changed with season depending on speed of deterioration. The attack density (number of egg galleries per bark area) greatly decreased, whereas length of mother gallery and the reproductive rate (number of survived adults per gallery) increased. Increased number of eggs per gallery and decreased larval mortality was a possible causes of the increase in reproductive rate. Although I. typographus japonicas basically spends one generation per year in the research site, results of this study and previous studies suggested that the 2nd generation appeared in the year following large-scale wind-disturbance.
