Additionally, this study aimed to identify pertinent factors that make a place an Ibasho. Through semi-structured interviews with 15 Japanese youths (5 males, 10 females; mean age 25.73 years, SD = 3.28), three main findings were obtained. Firstly, there was not a complete overlap between places frequented and places recognized as Ibasho - in fact, the participants raised a diverse range of Ibasho. Secondly, while places frequented were more likely to be recognized as Ibasho, the frequency of use was not a determinant factor. Finally, different types of Ibasho were formed in different ways, and fulfilled different functions. Notably, Ibasho was found to not be limited to concrete physical spaces. Therefore, when attempting to create spaces that could function as Ibasho, simply encouraging frequent use will have limited effectiveness - it is necessary to consider the individual characteristics in order to create Ibasho that will suit their needs. Furthermore, even features that seem negative might be the very reason why youth consider such a place to be an Ibasho.
