This paper focuses on the Jizoden site in Akita Prefecture, which is considered as a key site for resolving the above chronological issues, because many charcoals and carbonized materials have been recovered along with a body of stone tool assemblage including pointed trapezoids, a diagnostic tool type of Early Upper Palaeolithic in this region. Based on the results of the radiocarbon dating and the outlier analysis using OxCal program, we could narrow down the timing of human occupation at this site to 34,500-34,000 cal BP. This is currently one of the oldest ages obtained from reliable excavation contexts in the Tohoku region. To determine whether the age of Jizoden site can be applied to other sites which has similar type of pointed trapezoids, a geometric morphometrics of pointed trapezoids was conducted as well. The results showed clear morphological differences between the Jizoden site and another representative site, suggesting that pointed trapezoids continued for a relatively long time until about 33,000 cal BP. As a result of this study, Palaeolithic chronology in Tohoku can be summarized as sequential changes of hunting tips; starting from a wide variety of trapezoidal stone tools, subsequent standardization of pointed trapezoids, and ending in the adoption of various blade tools. Same sort of the chronology has ever been pointed out partially in previous studies.
