The family has been criticized in women's studies and gender studies from the point of view of gender inequality, and the commodification of care work such as housework and childcare has been proposed as a way of realizing gender equality. On the other hand, more recently, the assertion that care-based relationships are necessary has also been made in these fields. In regional and community studies and network studies, it has been pointed out that the collective nature of the family can no longer be assumed, because many needs that used to be satisfied within the family are now satisfied outside the family, and family members are spread out geographically.
