However, the fundamental question of “What is a museum?” has not been raised becausemuseum study has such a wide range today that it has become difficult to raise and share this fundamentalquestion. This paper tries to examine this question from the following three perspectives. First, the currentsituation of museums and their reform is described. Second, criticism of museums is re-examined from theiraspects as public facilities, as places for collection, and in terms of their educational function.
