In this study, field tests with two GNSS receivers, the mapping grade Trimble Pro series 6H and the consumer-grade Garmin GPSMAP 62 SCJ, both of which were the latest models as of April 2013, were conducted at the University of Tokyo Hokkaido Forest in summer and winter in order to examin the positioning accuracy under different survey conditions. The mapping-grade GNSS receiver exhibited high and stable positioning accuracy regardless of the season even under the forest canopy of a north-facing slope, having mean and maximum positioning errors of arround 2 m and 4 m, respectively. The positioning accuracy of the consumer-grade GNSS receiver was relatively low and unstable (approximately 4 m error on average and more than 10-20 m at maximum) . The positioning errors on a sloping and canopy-closed site were significantly greater than those on a flat and open site, while no significant difference was observed between summer and winter. For the mappinggrade GNSS receiver, the effect of shortening observation time to 15 sec. on positioning accuracy was not obvious, and implementing post-processing data correction probably increases the stability of positioning accuracy through the reduction of the maximum positioning
