This paper discusses people’s ideas about the cat and its conservation including the future-release project. Furthermore, this paper compensates for the lack of the past research as people’s perceptions of the release have not been investigated in the planning phase. We targeted by mail 1,000 residents in Tsushima City, Nagasaki Pref. in the age range 20 to 79. The randomsample was taken from the Basic Registry of Residents. The response rate was 48.8%. They felt “the cat is living only here” or “it is a symbol of this area”. Their evaluation was “the cat is native”, and the release itself was generally appreciated. However, they did not agree with the release being just in Shimo-Jima, where it is planned to be carried out. Although they did not always actually see the cat, from TV and Newspapers, or the Conservation Activities mainly for traffic accidents, they may know well that it lives only in Tsushima Island and now is becoming extinct. Furthermore, because they often do not see the cat in the wild, they also may not be able to perceive the advantages and disadvantages in relation to the cat.
