Every 2-5 days after planting, 4-50 cuttings were removed from rooting media at random and the majority of the basal portions of them were fixed in ALLEN'S fluid. Increase in the number of root primordia and roots after planting in Pinus densiflora and P. strobus are shown in Table 2. Other points of material and method in this experiment were the same as in the report 1(3). In Taxus cuspidata and Torreya nucifera most of adventitious roots arose from callus tissues in the same manner as in Cryptomeria, Thujopsis, Thuja etc(3) (Fig. 2, 3, 7, 8), but some of roots in Taxus developed from the irregularly arranged parenchymatous phloem layers near the cut base as in Abies and Picea(3) (Fig. 4, 5). All of roots in Pinus densiflora, P. Thunbergii, P. silvestris, P. pinaster, and about 6/7 of roots in P. strobus arose from callus (Fig. 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 20, 23) in the same manner as callus-roots observed until now, but about 1/7 of roots in P. strobus arose in connection with bud-primordia (Fig. 24, 25). Exogenous origin of callus-roots in Pinus densiflora cuttings reported preliminary(5) should be corrected by the results of this observation, because callus-xylem connected with developing root meristem.
