Typically, the directional indicates directions of actions or movements denoted by following content words (mostly verbs). Current grammatical descriptions, however, have not sufficiently explained its features, such as: when and how it can be used, who or what can be the referent point to encode directions, and how such points can be shifted as stories or conversations proceed. In this paper, the descriptions of the directional in four Eastern Polynesian languages and Niuean are briefly examined in order to improve current grammatical description of the directional in Hawaiian. The results are as follows: 1) In Hawaiian syntactic description, directional words aku, mai, iho, a `e should be divided into two subgroups, though it has not been used widely in the grammar of the language yet: \"deictic\" aku/mai and \"absolute\" iho/a `e. 2) In order to clarify the breadth and diversity of the possible usages of the superficially same sound and word forms (i.e. aku, mai, iho, a `e) , both syntactic and semantic aspects should be simultaneously incorporated into its systematical description, instead of simply trying to define the range of the meanings which directionals can have.
