As a result, it has been hitherto considered that in the first prototype English-Japanese dictionary (1814) and in the first commercialized dictionary (1862) that all Japanese words in those dictionaries were obtained by translating through a corresponding word in Dutch. However, Shoei Motoki, chief compiler of the first prototype of the English-Japanese dictionary, indicated that there are some instances where it is not possible to get the proper Japanese word by translating from English to Dutch, and then into Japanese. Yet, Motoki did not specify for which words this translation path was not possible. This paper makes clear the method for obtaining the correct Japanese word in such cases. The problem has also been successfully solved in the first commercialized English-Japanese dictionary.
