These objects have been usually interpreted as fishing net sinkers. However, this issue is still under debate because other purposes, such as angling sinker, kayak anchor, or weaving weight, are also suggested. Using the Geographical Information System (GIS), this paper aims at identifying the applications of Jomon sinkers by a series of spatial analyses of the dataset from certain areas in East Japan, namely, the Musashino Upland and Tama Hills, located in Tokyo Metropolis and the northeast part of Kanagawa Prefecture (Fig.2). This research project consists of several methodological steps. First, a large dataset of approximately 4, 100 Jomon sites and 3, 800 stone/clay sinkers in the study area are integrated into the GIS-compatible database (Fig.1, Tables 1-3; see also Appendix). Second, some important archaeological attributes of sinkers-number yielded, assemblage, spatial and temporal context, and weight-are displayed as a variety of dot maps, pie charts, or histograms on the GIS interface. By interpreting the spatial patterns from these maps, the nature of the \"\"space\"\" in which sinkers are discovered is evaluated as a \"\"place\"\" of human activity. As a result of the GIS-based spatial analysis, the following patterns are pointed out : (1) High-density clusters of sinker sites are identified in the Paleo-Tokyo Bay area, the left bank of the Tama River Valley, and its tributary, Nogawa (Fig.4); (2) ceramic sinkers become predominant from the middle (Katsusaka II) to later (Kasori-E III) phase of the Middle Jomon period (Figs.5-12; Tables 4 and 5); (3) the percentage of ceramic sinkers in the assemblage per site is higher in the coastal zone (Fig. 13); (4) in the middle phase of the Middle Jomon period, the percentage of Atamadai type ceramic sinkers is more significant in the bay area (Fig. 14); (5) in the Late Jomon period, the percentage of incised stone sinker increases, and in the Final stage, the assemblage includes a wide variety of sinker repertoire such as incised stone, grooved stone, and grooved clay type (Tables 4 and 5); (6) the comparative weight statistics of stone and clay sinkers indicate that stone sinkers are heavier than their clay counterparts with regard to their mean and median values (Figs. 15-17; Table 6); (7) although these sinkers are mainly recovered from fill deposits and house fills/floors, a significant number of them are also found in the alluvial deposits in the low wetland sites (Fig. 18 and Table 7). The holistic interpretation of these archaeological patterns enables us to conclude that Jomon sinkers including both stone and clay subtypes are highly likely to be used as fishing net sinkers, with the except ion of the heavy (300 g and more) tools from several sites, which should be used for other purposes related to fishing. This study also demonstrates that the GIS is a rather effective toolkit for analyzing spatial patterns of archaeological objects.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_4_full_name_3":{"attribute_name":"著者別名","attribute_value_mlt":[{"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"119785","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}],"names":[{"name":"Kondo, Yasuhisa"}]}]},"item_4_identifier_registration":{"attribute_name":"ID登録","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.15083/00027620","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_4_publisher_20":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"東京大学大学院人文社会系研究科・文学部考古学研究室"}]},"item_4_source_id_10":{"attribute_name":"書誌レコードID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AA11190220","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_4_source_id_8":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"02873850","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_4_subject_15":{"attribute_name":"日本十進分類法","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_subject":"202.5","subitem_subject_scheme":"NDC"}]},"item_4_text_21":{"attribute_name":"出版者別名","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_text_value":"The Department of Archaeology Faculty of Letters The University of Tokyo"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"近藤, 康久"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"119784","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2017-06-26"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"KJ00004702884.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"10.7 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"KJ00004702884.pdf","url":"https://repository.dl.itc.u-tokyo.ac.jp/record/27629/files/KJ00004702884.pdf"},"version_id":"78fbb02f-5e71-472a-9b9b-47f0027f464f"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"武蔵野-多摩-鶴見地域における縄文時代錘具の分布評価 : GISで考古遺物の性格を読み解く","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"武蔵野-多摩-鶴見地域における縄文時代錘具の分布評価 : GISで考古遺物の性格を読み解く"}]},"item_type_id":"4","owner":"1","path":["3316","3315"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2008-09-17"},"publish_date":"2008-09-17","publish_status":"0","recid":"27629","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["武蔵野-多摩-鶴見地域における縄文時代錘具の分布評価 : GISで考古遺物の性格を読み解く"],"weko_creator_id":"1","weko_shared_id":null},"updated":"2022-12-19T04:05:35.489888+00:00"}
