During the 1980’s, when mizuko kuyō was popular and on the rise, the mizuko rei (the spirit of the aborted fetus) was described as a “cursing ghost.” However, for the women who performed mizuko kuyō, would it be probable to say that they did so because they were scared of the mizuko’s curse? According to the research conducted to date, it has been impossible to determine the candor of responses from women who perform mizuko kuyō, and this phenomenon has excessively consumed observers as they have tried to conduct their analyses. In this study, I paid particular attention to mizuko kuyō ema (votive tablets) that were drawn by people who perform mizuko kuyō. I performed analysis on ema during multiple visits to two temple sites and also analyzed posts on a website featuring letters to mizuko. The unique fact that my research revealed was that the people who perform mizuko kuyō believe that the mizuko rei (spirit of the aborted fetus) is a “ghost that protects people” rather than a “ghost that curses.” The mizuko rei was formerly considered prone to instability and likely to stray. However, this paper will analyze how people’s perception has changed from a “ghost that curses” to that of a “ghost that protects the family.” I examined the causes of this change from four angles: 1) changes in the notion of ancestors; 2) changes in family relationships; 3) modification of memorial services for the dead; and 4) images of the dead as controllable. However, it is difficult to say that the image of the mizuko rei has simply changed from a cursing ghost to a protecting ghost. The image of the deceased changes every time we try to remember or imagine the dead, and such images can be re-created. The idea of the mizuko curse has been easily affected by external factors, such as changes in perception that reflect changes in the social environment or the agitation of the mass media. It is therefore difficult to think that people who have had abortions believe that the mizuko rei is a ghost that curses. Even if practitioners of mizuko kuyō believed this, it would represent none other than their guilty conscience regarding the act they had committed. We, the living, recall the dead. Based on the way we remember them, we can connect ourselves with the dead. Even though there is the eternal separation between the living and the dead, the relationship stays alive instead of fading away. For the dead to exist with the living might itself be considered salvation. Through the mizuko kuyō ema—a letter from the living to the dead—the dead and the living are still connected. This point of connection might be regarded as a type of religious salvation.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_4_description_6":{"attribute_name":"内容記述","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"論文/Articles","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_4_full_name_3":{"attribute_name":"著者別名","attribute_value_mlt":[{"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"66790","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}],"names":[{"name":"Kim, Yuli"}]}]},"item_4_publisher_20":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"東京大学文学部宗教学研究室"}]},"item_4_source_id_10":{"attribute_name":"書誌レコードID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AN10032645","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_4_source_id_8":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"02896400","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_4_text_21":{"attribute_name":"出版者別名","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_text_value":"Department of Religious Studies.
