The examples are referred to using the names of punishments mentioned in Muchaku Dōchū’s (無着道忠) Zenrin Shōkisen (『禅林象器箋』) as clue keywords. In the course of my research, I found similar expressions in the above texts and showed that their source was a text known as Chanmen Guishi (「禅門規式」), which has been believed to indicate the contents of an assumed first Chan Pure Rule written by Baizhang Huihai (百丈懐海). Though the first Pure Rule by Baizhang’s own handwriting has not been found and there is doubt about whether he really wrote it, there strongly exists in the Pure Rule texts a belief that Baizhang was the founding father of the first Chan monastery and its law, and that all the Chan monks and monasteries in later ages were heirs to Baizhang. Some examples from the texts showed such a sense of regulation by accepting the penal regulations written in Chanmen Guishi (「禅門規式」). Other examples show that there were punishments such as giving floggings, imposing fines, and banishment.
