内容記述 | In this paper, I discuss the thought of Inoue Kowashi, the founder of the modern Japanese education system. The notion of kokutai (national polity) formed the basis of his education system and his aim was to instill national awareness in the minds of the people by employing this notion./Inoue’s education system was strongly influenced by the thought of modern kokugaku. Modern kokugaku developed out of Edo period kokugaku by adapting to the changed political and intellectual circumstances of the new era. Modern kokugaku stressed the importance of the Japanese language and Japanese history because these two elements were deemed essential to establishing the notion of kokutai in society./I discuss three cases which exemplify the influence of modern kokugaku thought on Inoue. After becoming minister of education, Inoue increased the number of class hours reserved for education in Japanese language and Japanese history at junior high school and stopped the work of positivist historians who had been employed by the government to compile a history of Japan. The reason for this latter move was that the western methodology of textual criticism used by these official historians posed a threat to the notion of kokutai in Inoue’s eyes. The third case I address is the founding of Kokugakuin, in which Inoue was personally involved. As Kokugakuin was established as a research institution for modern kokugaku, Inoue had great hopes that it could function as a center for the dissemination of the notion of kokutai. | |||||
