He undertook field investigations of the cult of Saint Besse from July 2,0th to September 1st, 1912, in an area known as the Aosta valley. Though this area lies within the Italian border, the people of that region maintained their tradition of speaking ancient Provengal, or Langue d'Oc, more closely affiliated with neighboring France. This study was significant, as it was the first ever field investigation undertaken by a member of the Durkheimian school. Hertz's research targeted the rituals, faith, narratives, legends, and iconography surrounding the figure of Saint Besse. Though research into popular belief and tradition had been undertaken in folklore studies up to that point, Hertz approached the subject as a sociologist. His study thus served to mediate between the two disciplines, and can be seen as a precedent in the field of French ethnology. The originality of his research is demonstrated in this paper through a comparison of his analysis of a festival with those of a French folklorist and another sociologist from the same time.
