K. Gandhi, well-known as the \"Mahatma\" who led the non-violent movement against British imperial rule, was a strict ascetic as well as a political leader. He attempted to pursue a life of simplicity and poverty and struggled to maintain perfect control by the will over his passion and desire. He took lust as his most serious challenge and, at the age of 37, ceased intercourse with his wife and took the vow of Brahmacharya. But why did Gandhi need to take such a vow? Where was its necessity? Through a close reading of his autobiography, we can ascertain the following answers. First, he possessed a complex of lust and despotism toward his wife. Second, according to his own words, he had no other choice than to give up his household duties before making the decision to devote himself thoroughly to either public service or human nature. Last and most important, he held an unshakable belief in conservative sexual morality.
