A lifetime income maximization model indicates that the course that will maximize a girl's lifetime income depends on her life course outlook and household economic conditions. A comparison between the rational selection and a result from the survey of high school students'course selection shows that the course selection of a girl who has continuous working outlook meets the lifetime income maximization model. On the other hand, the course selection of a girl who has outlook that she will quit because of marriage or childbirth does not meet the model. However, when the positive effects of marriage on a girl's utility are taken into consideration, it is revealed that the marriage market which has become more closed off stimulates a girl to select college attendance. These analyses show that the combination of the labor market by educational background, household economic status, opportunity for marriage and high school tracking have been demonstrated to influence the rationale behind life course outlook during course selection. From this knowledge, we can derive the following three theoretical implications. First, the implications for Japan in terms of the admissions tracking must be re-investigated. The admissions tracking puts enormous pressure on girls with limited economic resources, leading them onto a course that is not rational for them personally and thus lowering their benefits. Second, it is important to accumulate research concerning gender norms in the labor market, with respect to the possibility that girls who have chosen a course that is rational at the time of high school graduation may be saddled with conflict caused by the This study aims to analyze the rationale behind course selection among high school girls̶on the basis of their life course outlook̶and to clarify the conflict that arises when girls select courses.
