The data used in this article is part of a larger project comparing teacher perceptions in four countries. For this study, the responses of the Japanese and Chinese teachers to model lessons focusing on the “ new” abilities (e.g., thinking skills) in four countries, Japan, China, and the United States and Singapore were used. The article shows how the preconceptions of whether the country in question is upheld as a model̶as in the cases of the United States and Singapore for both countries, and Japan for China̶reconstruction by teacher's discourse.
