Based on the studies about beliefs and personality, 24 items were invented for the Beliefs about English Learning Scale, and 10 items for the Emotion-Personality Scale. 360 Japanese junior high school students were asked to participate in the study and to respond to those items. A factor analysis showed that in the Beliefs about English Learning Scale consisted of four sub-categories: namely, 1. perfectionism in English learning, 2. weight on grammar, 3. sense of inferiority in speaking, and 4. orientation to intercultural communication. As for the Emotion-Personality Scale, a factor analysis indicated two subcategories: namely 1. activeness for speaking, and 2. carefulness. The analyses also showed sufficient reliability for both scales.
