Since the socialist revolution in 1949,the Chinese government promoted and implemented various social and educational reforms in order to establish a new socialist country. However, contrary to widespread expectations and assumptions those reforms and policies created new social divisions and henceforth inequalities with regard to educational and social opportunities. These inequalities and social divisions have continued to exist until the present day and, from the author's view, while having been at the foundation of current economic and educational development, they have also become the sources of various social and educational problems for Chinese society.
