Studies of conceptions of ability are reviewed. 11 is argued that conceptions of ability are not domain-specific, but are formulated by adapting goal-directed categories (e.g., causes-performances-outcomes) to achievement-related situations. Furthermore, the roles of sociocultural constraints are important of formulating conceptions of ability, because innate factors cannot explain formulating conceptions.
