However, scant attention has been paid to the developmental trend of ER. In this article, the development of emotional self-regulation in toddlerhood is discussed in relation to the emergence of representative ability, mainly pretense and language. It is argued that there are two aspects of development. First, the strategies that young children use to modulate their emotions increase dramatically in repertoir. That is, children begin to use pretense, image, and language as regulators of emotion.
