For example, PRESS (1956) studied the Rayleigh wave phase velocities and clarified crustal structure of a regional scale in south California. However, if we needed to know detailed crustal structure having considerable lateral inhomogeneity, we would need to use a station array of sufficiently high density, with station separations of some ten kilometers. The observation system, which was recently constructed by this Institute, seems to answer this purpose. This observation system is simply a chain of 9 stations with approximate separations of 30 kilometers and extends from the southern Kanto region to the northern part of Izu peninzula, Japan. Each station in this chain is equipped with the PELS Type 73 broad-band seismometer of the vertical component, signals from which are telemetered to the data acquisition system in Tokyo for analysis. This paper deals with ten sets of teleseismic records from this system and analyzes their spectral structures using the Fourier Transform method. Phase velocities of the Rayleigh wave components in these events are compared with those of the AKI's 6EJ model, so that we may derive from the records the crustal structure along the observation line. It is inferred that the average crustal thickness in the present area is 35-45 kilometers. This value is consistant with the results of Am (1961), but it seems to be a little larger than the results of HOTTA et al.
