This report describes the earthquake-induced damage on the various types of civil engineering and associated structures: ・ Road and highway structure ・ Railways ・ Ports and harbors ・ Water supply systems and sewerage structures ・ Electric power and communication systems ・ Gas supply systems  ・ Oil tanks ・ Ground liquefaction  ・ Landslides and land-failures  ・ River embankments The following characteristic features of the damage due to the earthquake are: 1. Sendai city was attacked by the earthquake of 1936 which is similar to this earthquake of June 12, 1978 with respect to the magnitude and the epicenter. However, the level of the damage by this earthquake is found much higher than that of the previous one. This can be attributed to the fact that civil engineering structures and home-dwellings are constructed in the recently developed urban areas where ground conditions are poor. Most of the damage can be seen in such areas. 2. A high correlation between the ground conditions and the damage, especially to the lifeline structures, is observed 3. Lifeline structures such as water, gas, and electric supply systems mostly lost their functions due to the earthquake, and people were subject to inconveniences. For example, it took 27 days to rehabilitate the whole gas system in Sendai city.
