Overestimation of magnitude by as much as 0.5 to 1.5 magnitude units in the epicentral distance ranging between 5° and 13° relative to the magnitude at teleseismic distances shows that the zone of low amplitude signals predicted by Gutenberg and Richter (1956) in that distance range does not exist as a worldwide phenomenon. Available distance range of the calibrating function Q(A) provided by Gutenberg and Richter as a worldwide standard should be limited to the distance range of more than 20°.
