Folgheraiter, Mercanton, Konigsberger,中村淸二博士,松山基範博士等によつて屡々測定され,この自然殘留磁氣は火山岩が噴出後,徐々に冷却する際に地球磁場の影響によつて帶磁し,その帶磁の一部が殘留するのである事がほゞ明らかになつた.從つて火山岩の自然殘留磁氣に關する殆んどすべての研究は,その帶磁方向の決定から,火山岩噴出當時の地球磁揚の方向を求めんとする事に向けられて來た.然し,火山岩の自然殘留磁氣の一つの著しい特徴は,その強さが同一岩石の地球磁場内に於ける誘導磁氣の強さに比して一般に著しく大きいといふ事實である.從つて岩石の自然殘留磁氣は何等かの特殊の事情の下に生成されると想像される.この點に關しては,僅かにKonigsbergerの研究があるのみであつて,火山岩の自然殘留磁氣生成の物理學的機構は未だ明瞭でない.他方,地球磁氣學の發達に伴ひ,地球磁場の局部的異常と地殼構造との關聯が次第に明らかになリ,將來他の諸種の地球物理學的方法の併用と相俟つて,地表に於ける地球磁力分布及びその變化の測定結果から地殼構造をある程度迄明瞭に推定し得る可能性が増して來た.この場合に地殼を構成する諮岩石の磁氣的性質の知識が問題の根底を爲す可きは論を侯たないが,Reich.
