He uses a number of horizontal, struts, each of which spans over the canyon, connecting the buttress walls. Both ends of each strut are to be rigidly anchored to the side slopes of the canyon, in most cases at footings of buttress walls. Horizontal component of seismic force acting on the dam is to be transmitted to the anchores by the struts, of which larger part is in compression and another in tension.
