Steinkellnerも指摘するように、その前主張と同様の陳述がダルマキールティの先師に当たるディグナーガの『集量論註』Pramāṇaviniścayavṛtti にも見られることが、現在広く知られている。もし『量決択』に引用された前主張が『集量論註』に述べられるディグナーガ自身の主張だとした場合、ダルマキールティは、ディグナーガの主張を批判して、それとは異なった自説を述べていることになってしまう。ダルマキールティは、自分の論理学思想はディグナーガに由来するものであるとし、ディグナーガの思想を説明ないし再解釈する立場にあることを強調する。であるにもかかわらず、ダルマキールティがディグナーガの主張を批判したとすると、解釈上不都合な問題が生まれることになる。この問題を意識していたのか、『量決択』に対する複数の註釈者は、その前主張をイーシュヴァラセーナに帰し、ダルマキールティの批判はディグナーガではなくイーシュヴァラセーナに向けられていると理解している。本論文では、以上のような議論の背景を念頭に置きながら、E.
