Because his light closely relates to the methods of going to his Pure Land, namely, the act of invoking his name (cheng-ming 称名) and that of meditating upon him (nian-fo 念仏), most earlier studies have focussed on this aspect of Amida's light. This paper, however, analyzes how Tan-luan (曇鸞, 476～542), a famous thinker of the Pure Land teachings, understood Amida's light itself without touching upon the issues of chengming and nianfo. Tan-luan is unique in that he uses the term equality to explain Amida's light. This is apparent in his main work, the Wuliangshou jing youpotishe yuansheng jie zhu (無量寿経優婆提舎願生偈註). He gives four meanings for this word. The first meaning is that the light in Amida's Pure Land cannot be compared with anything else in the world; his light is almighty. Amida's light brightens his Land and everything in it, and nothing is capable of dimming its brightness. The second meaning is that, influenced by Amida's act of equal-brightness (pingdeng guan-zhao, 平等光照), those who are born in the Pure Land will no longer recognize things relatively; concepts such as  ＂ good or not good, ＂   ＂ black or white, ＂  or  ＂ existence or non-existence ＂  will no longer exist. The third meaning is that all living things in his Land will become equal through his light. The fourth meaning is that Amida's light affects everything equally at the same time. Tan-luan also uses the term equality in the same way as he does in the Wuliangshou jingyoupotishe yuansheng jie zhu in his work the Zan Amituofo jie (讃阿弥陀仏偈).
