Taking most of his examples from poetry, he discussed and classified various kinds of images in terms of their relationships with the elements of earth, water, air, and fire. Before his death, he returned to images of fire. Some of this work was published before Bachelard died under the title The Flame of a Candle (La flame d'une chandelle, 1961). The remainder was edited by his daughter Suzanne and subsequently published as Fragments of a Poetic of Fire (Fragments d'une poétique du Feu, 1988). In this paper, I will consider Bachelard's examination of life and death images, focusing chiefly on these two volumes. In The Flame of a Candle, Bachelard claims that the candle's flame is a model of the tranquil and delicate life, because it expresses verticality and solitude. He uses the flame as a metaphor to explain how people live solitary lives with a desire to improve. On the other end of the spectrum, the death images of fire, which Bachelard examines in Fragments of a Poetic of Fire, are linked to the Phoenix, the mythical bird that dies by fire, and Empedocles, who killed himself by leaping into volcanic Mount Etna. Yet we must note that these two arguments, although published in two different volumes decades apart, were originally considered to be part of a single work. Consequently, to Bachelard, life and death images do not remain mutually exclusive opposites, but interdependent. The phoenix dies, but rises again from the ashes. Similarly, as I argue, Bachelard regarded life and death as two sides of the same coin.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_4_full_name_3":{"attribute_name":"著者別名","attribute_value_mlt":[{"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"95523","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}],"names":[{"name":"Hashizume, Keiko"}]}]},"item_4_publisher_20":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"東京大学大学院人文社会系研究科グローバルCOEプログラム「死生学の展開と組織化」"}]},"item_4_relation_9":{"attribute_name":"ISBN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_relation_type_id":{"subitem_relation_type_id_text":"9784925210218","subitem_relation_type_select":"ISBN"}}]},"item_4_source_id_10":{"attribute_name":"書誌レコードID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AA11838867","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_4_source_id_8":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"18826024","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_4_subject_15":{"attribute_name":"日本十進分類法","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_subject":"105","subitem_subject_scheme":"NDC"}]},"item_4_text_21":{"attribute_name":"出版者別名","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_text_value":"Global COE Program Development and Systematization of Death and Life Studies"}]},"item_4_text_4":{"attribute_name":"著者所属","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_text_value":"東京大学文学部美学芸術学研究室"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"橋爪, 恵子"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"95522","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2017-06-16"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"da017006.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"1.2 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"da017006.pdf","url":"https://repository.dl.itc.u-tokyo.ac.jp/record/41683/files/da017006.pdf"},"version_id":"8879b11a-b7a9-43f3-900f-f3114fde8150"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"ガストン・バシュラールにおける生と死のイメージ : 『蝋燭の焔』および『火の詩学 断章』を中心に","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"ガストン・バシュラールにおける生と死のイメージ : 『蝋燭の焔』および『火の詩学 断章』を中心に"}]},"item_type_id":"4","owner":"1","path":["7374","7887"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2012-05-16"},"publish_date":"2012-05-16","publish_status":"0","recid":"41683","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["ガストン・バシュラールにおける生と死のイメージ : 『蝋燭の焔』および『火の詩学 断章』を中心に"],"weko_creator_id":"1","weko_shared_id":2},"updated":"2022-12-19T04:17:02.027959+00:00"}
