Since its entry words were taken from Picard & Maatjes’s English-Dutch dictionary published in the Netherlands, 1857, it is widely believed that translated Japanese words were easily taken from the Dutch-Japanese dictionary, which was available then, using the translated Dutch words of the English-Dutch dictionary.\n However, the present author assumes that it might not be so simple, because English, Dutch and Japanese languages have unique linguistic properties. To verify the assumption, all words related to measurements in the \"Eiwa-Taiyaku-Shuchin-Jisho\" are inspected in view of the different measurement methods used in Holland, Britain, the United States and Japan. Notably Japan has her own original system of measuring length by the shaku and weight by the kan. Therefore translated Japanese words should be generally expressed in the Japanese measurements.\n Since both English and Dutch belong to the Indo-European language family, their vocabularies are closely related, but in some cases there are small differences in meaning, especially in words related to measurement, such as English pound (453.6g) vs Dutch pond (500g).
