Examples of this phenomenon involving such verbs as spray and load (e.g. John loaded hay onto the truck. / John loaded the truck with hay.) have been extensively discussed in the literature under the rubric of the “locative alternation.” While linguists generally agree that spray and load participate in this alternation, they are far from unanimous when it comes to (i) whether certain alternating verbs should be classified as locative alternation verbs and (ii) whether some verbs really alternate in the first place. After reviewing the previous studies, this paper argues that cognitive linguistics provides us with the descriptive constructs (e.g. schema/prototype) and basic vision (i.e. the usage-based model of language structure) that we need to figure out what grammatical alternations are all about.
