Thirty-five fifth graders were assigned one of the two groups involving different methods. The pupils in Method 1 group first found similarities between four ideas individually and then discussed similarities and differences between those ideas. The pupils in Method 2 group first ranked the four ideas individually and then discussed which idea is the best. After the class, all the pupils individually solved two problems that required them to select the most appropriate idea and to explain their reasons behind that selection.
