Despite 70% of the population reporting that they do not have faith in any religion, many private religious schools exist. Among these, Christian schools are the majority, where more than 500,000 “non-religious” Japanese students learn the Christian doctrine and core values as a part of their curriculum. Given the shift towards character-building education rather than an education-based evangelism in the past sixty years, this paper aims to provide a theoretical framework by reviewing the history as well as previous empirical work related to the topic. The results of the review suggest understanding Christian education as an active community of practice where students learn various values both explicitly and implicitly through socialization.
