He participated in an interdisciplinary collaborative research project on Minamata disease during the period between 1976 and 1980 and wrote a paper, “The Structure and Change of Minamata people’s inner world: focusing on the record of the rampage of Minamata disease through the fishing village Modō” in the collection of papers, The Revelation of Minamata, in order to discuss the destruction and recovery of the community through his unique fieldwork. First, I will summarize the key points of Munakata’s paper, especially his explanation of Three Layer Structure of the fisherfolk’s world view — human relationships to nature, family and society, and political economy. He argued that the conventional cosmos of first and second layers brought a sense of solidarity even between conflict parties, although the third layer of economic relationships could erode the former two layers. Secondly, I will clarify the characteristics of Munakata’s theoretical scheme and his field research method. His theories of the worldview and intersubjectivity were admittedly inspired by Alfred Schutz’s Phenomenological Sociology, but it was existential concerns deriving from his war experience that exerted profound influence. In regards to his research method, he conducted intensive fieldwork to build rapport with informants in Minamata and listened actively to their voices embedded among the practices of everyday life. He employed this method because he considered the conventional survey techniques of social science such as questionnaires could only approach to surface of their world-view.
