Despite the fact that the rise of French mysticism (la mystique) in the 17th century was impossible without the influence of the late medieval mysticism of Northern Europe, there is a transformation of spirituality between the two. Louis Cognet had already given a general perspective for understanding this change: from ontology to psychology. This thesis was developed by Mino Bergamo, who focused on the concept of “ground of the soul” and found the beginning of a psychologization of it in the concept of “point of spirit” presented by François de Sales. Following Bergamo’s insight, we will make it more clear what the transformation was.
