Seventy articles published in major journals (Leisure Studies, Leisure Sciences, Journal of Leisure Research) were reviewed. The result shows that previous research of serious leisure focused on social worlds, strategies for constraints, gender, minorities, effect on well-being, aspects of serious leisure, theoretical elaborations, and relationships to similar concepts. Recently there has been growing interest in amateurs and hobbies in Japan.
