The data includes Chinese conversational sentences from novels and their Japanese translations, collected from a corpus and classified by their Japanese sentence-final forms used as translations of ma (嘛). Not only the Japanese translations but also about 80% of the original Chinese sentences marked by ma (嘛) are found to pertain to causal relations in the broad sense of the term. Based on the theory of territory of information, the data is classified into four types to determine the correlative distance of the information marked by the utterance particle ma (嘛). The result strongly suggests that ma (嘛) predominantly marks information close to the speaker and that the distance between the hearer and the information is irrelevant to the use of ma (嘛). Thus with the help of ma (嘛), even information considered to be far can be presented as if it were close.\nBased on these findings, this paper argues that by using ma (嘛), the speaker presents the information in question as being causally linked to the context.
