For this purpose, we firstly define the distinctive features of the locative there, which is believed to have the clear referential properties as follows: ①definiteness (the delimitation of place), ②deixis (speaker as the deictic center, distality, implication of an addressee/s), ③ an objective/subjective speaker. Secondly, we examine how those features are related to the specific functions of the thereconstructions. The results of our research confirm that the locative there and the series of the thereconstructions form a gradation with a family resemblance. Then, we suggest that “there” which is placed at the beginning of the sentence, the most salient position, is an index of the distinct mode of the construal of the there-constructions.
