Neo-Latin is described as a growing field of study and its affinity to classical receptions explored. The 1779 Latin elegy by Richard Wellesley commemorating his graduation from Eton is briefly summarized and analyzed as an example of Neo-Latin. Classical receptions in non-Western contexts as have been recently studied by Vasunia, Ronnick and others are then sketched in their outlines as possible parallels to consider for Japanese scholars who are interested in exploring classical receptions in their own culture. The appendix gives the original Latin text and English translation (prepared by the article author) of the Wellesley poem.\n This first installment serves as an introduction to sequels in which Japan-related Neo-Latin from the 16th century to present and classical receptions in modern Japanese works of fiction will be discussed.
