This stylistic feature has been analysed by previous works. However, some phrases in Carm.1.32 still have interpretative difficulties. This article attempts to reexamine three such passages, namely 1) l.1(Poscimus…), 2) l.2 (quod et…) ,3) l.15-6 (mihi †cumque† salve…). In addition, through interpreting these phrases, I aim to reconsider Horace’s intention of using the formula of prayers in this poem.\n The contents are as follows. First, I resume two poetic conventions used in Carm.1.32: Aappeal to the lyre (as Sappho.fr.118 Voigt:Bacchyl.fr.20B S-M etc.) and the language of prayers. This mixture of conventions itself could be regarded as amusing device employed by Horace. Second, I try to interpret three phrases shown above. Former judgements of critics for these phrases are reexamined. Particularly on 3), which contains one of the most controversial word (†cumque†) in this poem , I demonstrate my own view on l.15-6. The most possible opinion is Fraenkel’s, but even his opinion is uncertain. So I begin my discussion on l.15-6 by concentrating on the meaning of salve/χαῖρέ, whose ambiguous meaning has been studied in research of Greek hymn from Bundy. If salve/χαῖρέ has the ambiguous meaning (for Bundy etc. ‘rejoice’), the collocation of salve/χαῖρέ with adverbial †cumque† is not impossible (of course, whether †cumque† has adverbial function is very doubtful but believed from the scholia of Porphyrio.). Consequently I understand l.15-6 as Horace’s wish for getting acceptance for his entry to Greek lyric poets (as Carm.1.1.35) from the ancient Greek lyre if he deserves rite vocanti.
