Prior research about this topic can be divided into two issues: the first is based on the theory of social mobility; the second is about how job-matching processes sort strong candidates from weak ones. Because prior research assumes the signaling theory and the “social birth” theory, that is, the student’s background is not related to the first occupational status after taking a degree of the (prestigious) university, are conformable for Japanese employment practices, most of prior research emphasized the correspondence between the first occupational status and the academic background. However, these prior research have failed to focus on the theory of social stratification.
