内容記述 | Religious situations in Rome are very complicated. The city experienced three different forms of government during the regal period, the republican period, and the imperial period. Its religious situations in the regal period, which lacks historical documents, can be reconstructed by comparison with the documents of other Indo-European branches. Combining the ritual calendars and documents recorded by antiquarians, its religious situations in the republican period could be accurately described. As the Roman Empire holds vast territories extending from the British Isles in the west to the Pontic in the east and from Germania in the north to North Africa in the south, the Roman religious situations are hard to summarize. The Empire has many different kinds of religions, the imperial cult of emperor worship, many mystic cults such as the Dionysiac, Eleusinian, and Mithraic, and Judaism as well as Christianity. Although the history of Roman religions has been a traditional branch of the history of religions since the beginning of the discipline, not many have attempted to construct a bird’s-eye view starting from the regal period down to Christianization. This modest paper is an attempt to present the author’s personal view on how Roman religions transformed themselves from the period of a city of seven hills to the period when the Romans called the Mediterranean ‘‘Mare Nostrum,’’ meaning ‘‘Our Sea.’’ | |||||
