This paper mainly covers Dewey’s The Children and the Curriculum (1902), The School and Society (1915), Democracy and Education (1916) and Experience and Education (1938). \n In reviewing how traditional and progressive education had been criticized by Dewey, this report attempted to reveal the function of schools and the teacher's role which Dewey had thought in it. Dewey had criticized both traditional and progressive schools for not functioning sufficiently as a venue for educational experience. Based on this perspective, what Dewey conceived was the school as an educationally controlled environment for the development of the intelligence. And it is the teacher who plays an important role in school as this intentional environment.
