Examining the social changes that occurred at that time is thus not only a question of regional history, but a serious factor in understanding the background of this changing period in the Japanese archipelago. However, recent studies are still unclear about the nature of the archaeological sites within the Omi area and the regional interaction between it and surrounding areas. In particular, the pottery chronology of the northern shore of Lake Biwa, an important point of connection with the southern shore (the center of the distinctive phenomena), has not been sufficiently studied. One factor that complicates study of a pottery chronology in this area is the lack of a form of pottery used to judge the period. However, by focusing on the vessel stand pottery considered characteristic of the Omi area, a pottery chronology of the northern Omi region can be reconsidered.<br/>This paper presents a pottery chronology for accurately assessing the significance of archaeological phenomena in the Omi area compared to its surroundings. The study’s analysis divided the target period into nine phases based on typological changes in vessel stand pottery, and clarified the pottery composition in each period. Until now, it has been necessary to compare excavated pottery with a representative pottery chronology from another area to determine the period in the target area. This paper’s results make it possible to determine the specific period based on indicators for the northern Omi area. In addition, the epoch between phases V and VI, when significant changes in pottery composition were recognized, may be linked to the surrounding areas.
