Given that it is in the subjunctive mood, it would be expected to mean literally: ‘If I were not smart or sensible enough not to think p, I’d think [say, etc.] p. (But in fact, since I am smart or sensible enough not to think p, I don’t think [say, etc.] p.)’ The meaning it actually conveys, however, is along the lines of ‘surprisingly, it sounds [looks, etc.] like p,’ which is quite the opposite in terms of whether the speaker believes p. It is argued that the use of the subjunctive mood in this pattern represents a pragmatic strategy: by pretending that she could think p depending on her state of knowledge while implying that she does not in her current one, the speaker is trying to convince the hearer that the thought p can potentially be entertained by anyone. This represents an attempt to attribute the cause of the thought p to something out there in the world, not her personal “take” on it, thereby lending (at least a semblance of) objectivity and plausibility to what she is saying. Corpus data indicate that this construction constitutes a prototype category, if I didn’t know (any) better, I’d think [say] (that) being the central members and other members such as if I didn’t know {you / it} better, I’d swear (that) and if I didn’t know better, it {looks / sounds} like being around the periphery.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_4_description_6":{"attribute_name":"内容記述","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"論文 Articles","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_4_full_name_3":{"attribute_name":"著者別名","attribute_value_mlt":[{"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"163038","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}],"names":[{"name":"Hirasawa, Shinya"}]}]},"item_4_identifier_registration":{"attribute_name":"ID登録","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.15083/00079910","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_4_publisher_20":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"東京大学大学院人文社会系研究科・文学部言語学研究室"}]},"item_4_select_14":{"attribute_name":"著者版フラグ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_select_item":"publisher"}]},"item_4_source_id_10":{"attribute_name":"書誌レコードID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AN10148796","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_4_source_id_8":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"13458663","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_4_text_21":{"attribute_name":"出版者別名","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_text_value":"Department of Linguistics, Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology, Faculty of Letters, The University of Tokyo"}]},"item_4_text_4":{"attribute_name":"著者所属","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_text_value":"慶應義塾大学"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"平沢, 慎也"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"163037","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2020-11-16"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"ggr042004.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"1.7 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"ggr042004.pdf","url":"https://repository.dl.itc.u-tokyo.ac.jp/record/54794/files/ggr042004.pdf"},"version_id":"22bb6fcd-64b1-470d-8047-6aedd0b9602d"}]},"item_keyword":{"attribute_name":"キーワード","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_subject":"仮定法","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"字義通りの意味","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"語用論","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"慣習性","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"頻度分布","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"プロトタイプカテゴリー","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"subjunctive mood","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"literal meaning","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"pragmatics","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"conventionality","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"frequency distribution","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"prototype category","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"よくある言い回しに隠れた戦略的仮定法 : If I didn’t know better, I’d think SVはSVと思っていない人が使う表現か","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"よくある言い回しに隠れた戦略的仮定法 : If I didn’t know better, I’d think SVはSVと思っていない人が使う表現か"}]},"item_type_id":"4","owner":"1","path":["8509","8507"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2020-11-16"},"publish_date":"2020-11-16","publish_status":"0","recid":"54794","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["よくある言い回しに隠れた戦略的仮定法 : If I didn’t know better, I’d think SVはSVと思っていない人が使う表現か"],"weko_creator_id":"1","weko_shared_id":2},"updated":"2022-12-19T04:32:07.155204+00:00"}
