While acknowledging its appeal, Miki (2019) claims that this kind of semantics should be rejected for the following reasons: (1) that it cannot accommodate, without falling into an infinite regress, the fact that when the speaker means something, it must be manifest that he or she does so, and (2) that the speaker can mean something without fully intending to do so and, conversely, the speaker can fail to mean what he or she fully intends to mean. This paper shows that (2) alone could constitute a valid reason for rejecting intention-based semantics, thereby assessing the limitations of this theory more accurately.
