This paper claims that this employment of the imperfect bdaː indicates an event that is temporally and cognitively precedent to another event. In this case, the latter is seen as a benchmark event. Examining the date of this bdaː, which denotes a preceding event, the paper identifies three usages: aspectual, modal, and discourse.
