On this view, the meaning of a linguistic sign is renewed every time the sign is used, rather than being something invariable that is rigidly associated with it. Positing that what makes this constant renewal possible is the utterer’s intense interest in the entity referred to, this paper shows that tautology serves to express the freedom to identify something unique about the entity, something that inspires the intense interest.
