Nominal grounding is implemented not only by the grammatical elements such as articles or demonstratives, but also by other means. This paper examines the relation between grounding and the lexical meanings of nouns in Japanese and English. After an overview of the Cognitive Grammar analysis of the English definite article, it is shown that relational nouns of a certain kind embody the function of grounding.
